Camping in San Diego

Camping in and around San Diego

Due to the mild climate, camping in San Diego is very popular among outdoor enthusiasts. Although the northern areas such as Yosemite National Park tend to attract the most campers, camping in the hinterland of San Diego is very easy. And if you don’t want to spend the night in a tent, you can rent one of the many RVs or cabins to enjoy the comfort of your own home, even in nature.

The best campsites in San Diego

San Elijo State Beach Campground

Location: Encinitas, CA – approximately 30 minutes from downtown San Diego

The campsite on San Elijo State Beach is particularly popular with surfers, families and beach lovers thanks to its location directly on the beach. In addition to surfing, there is a popular snorkeling and diving reef, and the center of the city of Encinitas is only a few kilometers away.

Tip: If possible you should reserve a tent site facing the beach! Places near the street and train route are louder. The places are all booked up quickly, so it is worth checking out in good time.

Paso Picacho Campground

Location: Julian, CA – about 1h from downtown San Diego

Paso Picacho is the best campsite for anyone looking for nature and tranquility. About 1 hour from San Diego, you feel far away from city life. For hikers there are some options to explore the area up to Lake Cuyamaca, two well-known hiking trails are ‘Cuyamaca Peak’ (5.5km) and ‘Stonewall’ (3.5km).

Tip: You can follow the hiking trails almost without limits and discover amazing corners. You should book early for the summer months, for spring and autumn there are usually places at short notice.

Campland on the Bay
