Backpacks & bags

Backpacks and practical utensil bags: intelligent luggage specialists for outdoor and work

Due to their special construction, backpacks distribute the weight of the luggage over the whole body. This avoids the one-sided strain on the spine and there is no back pain. Thanks to innovative features and different sizes, the backpacks can be perfectly tailored to your activities.

Hiking backpacks for the day tour
Backpacks with a filling volume of 25 to 35 liters are very suitable for one-day hikes. Ventilation back systems, in which a mesh, a preform in the back area or vertical foam channels ensure air circulation, make the backpacks comfortable to wear in summer temperatures. In addition to ergonomically shaped straps, some models have an additional pelvic and chest strap so that they sit extremely stable. In the numerous outside pockets, some of which are softly padded, you can store the sunglasses and utensils within easy reach. The intelligent division of the inner compartments makes packing the backpack easier. Some models are equipped with a well-padded laptop compartment and are suitable for hikes as well as for university and office.

How do I find the right backpack?

“I pack my backpack and take with me …” – yes, what actually? Packing a bag properly and restricting yourself to the most important things quickly turns out to be a challenge. But first the question arises, which backpack do you choose at all? Backpacks are so versatile in their sizes, colors and shapes that choosing the right one is not so easy. Basically, however, it has to fulfill three important prerequisites: sit comfortably, be robust and hold exactly the necessary volume.

Which backpack suits me?

Long hikes are hardly imaginable without a trekking backpack and the classic daypack is also a clever solution in everyday life. A backpack is ideal for carrying larger loads. This works very well for a long time, since the weight is evenly distributed on both shoulders and, depending on the model, also affects the hips. And best of all: you have free hands at all times. However, wearing comfort is only guaranteed if you choose the right backpack for you. But how should you go about it?

At the beginning, there are some basic questions that need to be answered to help you make a purchase decision. First and foremost, you should know what you want to use your backpack for and what size it takes. All mandatory extras must also be clarified at the beginning so that you do not carry any unnecessary weight with you.

Men’s or women’s backpack – just a question of design?

Often, the women’s backpack can already be recognized optically by appropriate colors and details that radiate a feminine aesthetic. But the real core is hidden in the structure and cut: Bags for women have a special carrying system that is adapted to the female anatomy:

– Usually lower volume
– Shorter back length
– Adjusted shoulder straps and shoulder straps
– Conical hip belt with padding

The latter feature brings with it the diagonal hip fins of the backpack, which adapt better to the wide hips of women and thus ideally carry the weight at this point. If possible, women should rather use these special models to benefit from high comfort.

Different models for every application

Interested in backpacking and hiking in breathtaking landscapes? In order to experience nature at its most beautiful and to enjoy the excursion, the equipment must be adapted to the situation. So the choice of the backpack model is of great importance. Different types equip you for every occasion and are robust, back-friendly and stable.

There are also some special models, such as the hydration backpack, which has a separate compartment for the hydration bladder as well as exits and guide loops for the hydration tube. Many modern backpacks are equipped from the ground up with this practical extra and make it easier to absorb fluids when hiking.

There are also special backpacks for children that are especially geared towards small body sizes. A laptop backpack has a special compartment for the notebook. There are also travel backpacks and backpack trolleys as well as backpacker backpacks. Simply select the model from numerous offers that exactly meets your requirements and contains all the necessary extras.

Mini, Midi, Maxi – Size matters

With a healthy constitution and training, the weight of the backpack should not exceed 1/4 of your own body weight, otherwise you will not be able to cope with the load in the long run. A maximum weight of around 16 kg is generally recommended for men, while women should not carry more than 12 kg. In general, the lighter the backpack, the better.

You choose the right size of your backpack based on the capacity, which is given in liters. The following table will make your selection easier:

Volume in liters. / Intended purpose
20 to 30: Ideal for day trips or as an additional bag for hand luggage
30 to 50: Sufficient for multi-day hiking tours
50 to 70: Classic backpacking backpack for extended trekking tours
from 70: For long journeys with special equipment

Align the volume in particular with whether you have to carry food with you for days or make many stopovers and can get supplies there. It also depends on the climatic conditions: in warm regions you have to carry less clothing and equipment with you and you are better advised with smaller luggage.

Our tip: You should stow all objects in the backpack and rather not attach them outside, otherwise the stability of the backpack will suffer. Exceptions are items such as a tent, sleeping bag and sleeping pad, since they consume a lot of storage space but are still extremely light – so you save space and are well equipped.

Robust backpack material for years of durability

When it comes to clothing and utensils for outdoor adventures, there are two important rules: it must be robust and comfortable. Because on the one hand you want to enjoy the surroundings to the fullest on longer tours and concentrate on the activity. On the other hand, the backpack should withstand strong sunshine and heavy rainfalls and fulfill its usefulness for many years. Keep the following points in mind:

– Synthetic fibers such as nylon and polyester are most commonly used for backpacks.
– Polyester is UV-resistant, while nylon is more durable and lighter.
– Fabric or leather is only suitable for backpacks that are used in daily use.

If you want to do something good for the environment, choose a model made from recycled canvas or even polyester yarn, which was made from PET bottles. Incidentally, the thickness of the fiber used is specified in the Tex unit: the higher the number, the more robust the fabric – a value of 500 is usually sufficient.

Waterproof material is recommended for outdoor activities, but moisture will usually get through on the seams and zipper. The solution: an additional rain cover that can be simply stretched over the entire backpack.

With a light rain cover, the backpack is well protected from rain and snow. The cover keeps moisture out, but also provides better visibility with reflective elements. The rain cover can usually be folded compactly and stowed away quickly.
If your backpack is dirty after the tour, there are a few things you need to take care of. Among other things, backpacks usually do not belong in the washing machine or dryer, unless it is explicitly stated on the washing instructions. It’s best to wipe the inside with a damp microfiber cloth. On the outside, however, you clean the material by brewing the backpack in the shower with lukewarm water.

If it is very dirty, it is worth soaking it in a wash bowl beforehand. But never use aggressive detergents! These damage the coating and decompose the material.

Backpack bought – what now?

When the right model has arrived at home and the next tour is imminent, packing and stowing is the order of the day. The right technology is required to optimally distribute the load when carrying and to shift the center of gravity. On short tours, this should be close to your back at the level of your shoulders – the more strenuous the tour, the lower the center of gravity should be. Heavy objects should generally be close to your back.

In our backpack equipment consultant you will find more information about packing and adjusting the backpack correctly.
When carrying it is important that the weight is not on the shoulders but on your hips. The waist belt must therefore run centrally over the upper edge of the pelvic bone in order to fulfill its function. The backpack should never pull you back, but should sit comfortably.

With the help of the shoulder and burst straps you ensure a comfortable fit. So you carry everything in your backpack and can concentrate fully on the next adventure. So into nature!
