Tent online shop – buy camping tents & trekking tents
The difference between unforgettable camping experience and horror nights with dripping seams and aching backs is made especially by the right tent. Depending on whether you are planning a family vacation or fulfilling the lifelong dream of an adventure trip into the wilderness, a different model is recommended. The planned purpose is therefore decisive when choosing and determines not only which type of tent is best suited, but also which material is recommended. If you want to buy a tent, you will find a large selection of different brands and shapes of tents at campers-shop.com.
From antiquity to the present – the history of the tent
The tent is one of the oldest forms of construction to protect against the forces of nature. The first known models, which at the time consisted of animal skins and a wooden frame, date back to the Paleolithic period around 40,000 years ago. The formerly heavy and unwieldy tents have developed over time into lighter and more compact constructions, whereby in addition to innovative materials with useful properties, the focus is also on a simple structure.
For example, the wooden frame became aluminum, which is not only lighter but also significantly more robust. The poles, which used to be tied with animal tendons or string, now hold thanks to sophisticated plug-in mechanisms or are so flexible thanks to new-fashioned materials such as fiberglass that the entire tent can even be folded. This turns one of mankind’s oldest dwellings into leisure fun for the modern world.
What does a tent have to endure?
Depending on which activity is planned, different demands are placed on the camping accommodation. In any case, it should be cold-resistant and water-repellent, but at the same time permeable to air in order to avoid the formation of condensation.
If you have to carry your tent with your own luggage on your body, for example when hiking in the mountains, a low weight is particularly advantageous. For this reason, the ultralight tent also saves on features. So if you spend your vacation at a campsite and transport everything by car, it makes sense to pay more attention to the equipment and less to the weight.
Which materials are the best?
In most cases, flysheets are made of polyester, cotton or nylon. Each material has special properties and has advantages but also disadvantages. Which material is the right one depends solely on the intended use: If you often camp in the open during the warm season, polyester is a good choice because it is UV-resistant. However, it weighs a little more than nylon and is also less robust.
Nylon, on the other hand, is the lightweight among the materials, but it is UV-sensitive and expands when wet – so on a summer vacation it is advisable to set up the tent in a shady spot. Cotton is particularly recommended for multi-person tents because it is very breathable. On the other hand, cotton is the heaviest material and tears relatively quickly. And also when it comes to rain, you have to reckon with the fact that it takes a few minutes for the material to swell in such a way that it keeps tight – however, this problem is usually negligible for models with an inner tent.
Tip: If you want to buy a new tent, it is advisable to choose the material so that it suits you with your vacation plans.
Which tent is right for me?
Which tent is the right one depends on the purpose. The following questions should definitely be asked when choosing:
Should the tent be used under extreme conditions?
If you are planning an expedition into rough regions, you need a model that can withstand strong storms and possible snowfalls. The focus is on robustness and stability. When camping in high mountains, UV resistance is also an important criterion.
Is the tent transported far?
Are long hikes planned or will the tent be transported on a bike? Weight and dimensions are essential for trekking or cycling tours. It is important to keep the weight as low as possible, otherwise a tent can quickly prove to be an unpleasant burden.
How many people should be accommodated?
Comfort is more important in family tours. In addition to the number of beds, the standing height and the spatial layout of the tent are important for longer stays at campsites.
General tips for setting up the tent
The most important tip first: familiarize yourself with your tent at home before starting your holiday. Build it up and down as a test so that it will work without problems later in the dark or under adverse weather conditions. Prepare the floor space by removing stones, branches or other objects. Always secure the tent with pegs and make sure that they have a firm hold. If they are too loose, it makes sense to weigh them down with stones, for example.
Depending on the type of tent, the structure is different: While for most models the poles have to be pushed together, a possibly existing inner tent has to be attached and only then the outer tent and the pegs are used, there are real speed miracles. This includes the throwing tent. Once unpacked, you just throw it in the air – of course, so that it lands as close as possible to the place where it should later be. The pop-up tent unfolds completely during the flight and is ready for immediate use.
Tip: Make sure to always pack your pitch tent clean and tidy after dismantling, so as not to damage anything and to benefit from the set-up in a matter of seconds when you use it again.
Camping in wind and weather
In nature there is not always sunshine. It is therefore important that your tent remains stable and tight even in rain or wind. To stay dry in any weather, there are a few tips you can follow.
How do you protect your tent from rain?
An important criterion for this is that the tent has a waterproof outer tent. How watertight the material is is indicated in the form of the water column in mm, whereby a value of 1,500 mm is considered watertight. But the parking space also plays an important role. If possible, you should choose a slightly higher location so that the rain flows downhill – but be careful of the wind.
Camping under trees is not a good idea with announced rains, as the leaves will continue to drip when the rain has stopped. The drops will not affect the tightness, but the constant noise can quickly become a nuisance, especially at night.
How do you protect your tent from the wind?
First of all, you should avoid setting up the tent on passes, crests or below high cliffs to avoid falling winds. However, the terrain can be hilly. Ideally, the floor should be firm so that the pegs hold well. The tent itself should be stretched tight, with the outer tent stretching wrinkle-free around the inner tent.
Tip: Since storm lines and outer tents made of nylon expand when wet, it is advisable to check once a day whether the lines are still tight and, if necessary, to pull them tight again.
How does condensation form in the tent and how can you prevent condensation?
If it gets wet in the tent, it doesn’t have to be because the tent is leaking. With polyester, where UV resistance is paramount, condensation can form, for example. The material is not breathable, which can lead to this effect if there are large differences between the inside temperature and the outside temperature. The warmth emitted during breathing or damp clothing can also contribute to this.
Condensation cannot be completely avoided, but it can be reduced to a minimum. When buying, you should make sure that the tent has good ventilation options or use a dehumidifier. In addition, you should keep the access closed during the day and only open when the climate has cooled in the evening.
Heating and cooling when camping
There are various types of heating on the market with several performance levels, which differ mainly in the energy source used. However, it is important to carefully consider which type of heating you want to use, because not everyone is suitable. There are basically three different types:
1. Electric heaters
2. Heaters with gas cartridges
3. Propane gas heaters
The safest option is the electric heater variant, which requires the presence of a nearby power connection, which often does not exist. Heaters with gas cartridges only have half the power of electric heaters, but are handy for this and do not require any electricity. When purchasing a heater with a gas cartridge, make sure that it is equipped with a safety mechanism to prevent gas from escaping.
Propane gas heaters are also an option. They are often used for the awning. These models can be connected to propane cylinders, so they are more for caravan tourists than for trekking enthusiasts.
Camping with a dog
If you are planning a camping holiday with a four-legged friend, there are a few points to consider. It plays a role here whether dogs are allowed on the campsite at all, but also whether dog owners’ spaces are separate from those of other guests. You should also pay attention to whether there are free-range options such as a dog meadow or forest areas nearby: Because your dog is doing well, you are doing well too.
Clean the tent – how it works!
It sleeps nicest in clean accommodation. Therefore, you should always keep your temporary home clean – especially at the end of the holiday, because if you pack the dirt with it, the material could be damaged.
First remove the coarse dirt with a vacuum cleaner or shovel and broom. Then the inner tent is cleaned with a mild soapy water, and any stains can be treated with vinegar or mold remover. The outer tent should not be scrubbed, as this could damage the impregnation. Again, it is best to use only mild detergents such as soapy water.
Our tip: Ice spray helps with stubborn contamination: the dirt hardens and can then be easily removed.
This way you will enjoy your tent for a long time. If you want to buy a new one, you will find models from various brands at campers-shop.com.
