A roof top box is very practical when you go on vacation or camping with your car. A roof top box is very easy to mount on the roof of your vehicle. All you need are roof rails on your vehicle and then roof crossbars to which the roof top box is screwed.

A roof top box gives you a lot of additional storage space in your vehicle and you no longer have to make full use of the trunk of your vehicle.

A roof top box is very stable even at higher speeds. Because the roof top boxes are very streamlined, they offer hardly any wind resistance. Likewise, high-quality roof top boxes do not make any wind noise.

In our online shop you will find high quality roof top boxes at low prices.

How are roof boxes installed?

When assembling roof boxes, it is particularly important that the box is as centered and level as possible on the roof rack. In most boxes, the recesses in the floor not only ensure better aerodynamics, but also ensure that the roof box is placed in the right places on the roof rack. In this way, the weight of the roof box is optimally distributed on the roof rack and your vehicle is not heavier on either side.

After the roof box is correctly placed on the roof rack, it only needs to be connected to the rack. There are different fastening systems for this, depending on the roof box and the carrier model used. Regardless of whether it is a T-slot adapter, U-bracket or claw fastening, the same principles apply to all of them: They must sit firmly on the roof rack, must not be misunderstood when tightened and should be tightened with the specified torque. Observe the assembly instructions for the roof rack and roof box in the respective installation instructions. Then nothing stands in the way of a safe journey on vacation.

What opening systems are there for roof boxes?

Double action
Similar to the hinge of a ladder, specially developed springs made of nylon and fiberglass ensure that the roof boxes can be opened and closed easily and the lid cannot be misled at the side.

Dual side
With this system developed by Thule, special buckling springs ensure that the roof box can be opened on both sides. This means that the box can be conveniently attached to the roof rack and easily loaded and unloaded.

DuoLift
The support that connects the floor to the roof box lid works like a hinge. The “DuoLift”, which enables opening on both sides, consists of this lid support in combination with the central locking system installed on both sides of the box. Here the striker of the lock also serves as a hinge. When the roof box is open on the right, the left striker acts as a hinge and vice versa.

How should luggage be stowed in roof boxes?

When loading the roof box, the same principles apply as when loading the vehicle. To make sure that everything stays in place during the journey, it is advisable to transport larger and heavy pieces of luggage as centrally as possible and on the bottom of the luggage box. It is advisable to secure them with tension belts to prevent them from slipping.

Stow the load as flush as possible. Should there be any gaps, fill them in with items of clothing, blankets or a sleeping bag. Make sure, however, that there isn’t too much in the box in the end. The lid should always be easy to close without pressure and should lie flush on the lower part. So the airstream is not exposed to any attack surface.

How do I secure luggage in roof boxes?

Secure large and heavy objects with tension belts to prevent them from slipping. Due to the high-quality workmanship, all of the roof boxes we offer have integrated tensioning straps and fastening points for further securing options as standard. Fill in the gaps between the cargo, e.g. with blankets or clothing. So nothing can slip even on winding roads.

Expert tip: You can be absolutely sure with the additional use of a luggage net.

What to do with the roof box if I don’t need it?

Due to the design, with a few exceptions, roof boxes cannot be folded up for space-saving storage. If there is not much space in the basement or garage, we have the right solution for you.

Storage on the wall
With a wall bracket system, you can simply hang your luggage box on the wall. The foam-coated retaining arms can be folded out if necessary and ensure that the roof box does not get scratched. This system is a real multi-talent. It is also ideal for hanging up bicycles, bike racks or ladders to save space.

Storage under the ceiling
Storing your roof box is even easier with the Thule Boxlift. Once installed under the ceiling (preferably in the garage or carport), a smooth, comfortable system ensures that your luggage box can simply be pulled up and, if necessary, lowered directly onto the roof rack. There is no more convenient way to assemble roof boxes.

How do I protect roof boxes from theft?

Since the fastening systems with which the roof boxes are anchored to the basic rack can only be operated from the inside, the roof rack must primarily be protected from theft and dismantling when securing the roof box. High-quality roof racks have already integrated lockable lock cylinders as standard.

For many cheaper carrier systems, locks are offered separately as accessories that are subject to a surcharge. Roof racks in the low-price segment are rarely lockable and thus protected against theft.
